Director of classification administrative files, 1938-1977.

The Dept. of Correction is responsible for administering the state correctional system and providing custodial and rehabilitative services to persons sentenced to state correctional institutions. The Classification Office in the department performs background investigations of inmates for institutions in the system and responds to requests for family background from other states under terms of interstate compact. In addition the office is responsible for preparing certificates of discharge for inmates upon termination of sentence. Administrative files contain memoranda, correspondence, and reports that relate to the functions of the office.

The Board of Parole for the State Prison and the Massachusetts Reformatory and the Board of Parole for the Reformatory for Women were established in 1913, serving jointly as an Advisory Board of Pardons.
